Policeman killed, five injured in Kashmir violence

Suspected Muslim militants have shot dead a police constable and injured two paramilitary officers, just hours after New Delhi extended its unilateral ceasefire in Indian-administered Kashmir.

Police say a constable working as a driver for the local police was shot dead by gunmen in Baramulla, 54 kilometres north of Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar.

Three others were injured in the surprise attack.

In another incident, suspected militants wearing army fatigues opened fire on a group of paramilitary Border Security Force personnel in Pattan, 34 kilometres north of Srinagar, injuring two people.

The incidents came as Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee announced a three-month extension of a ceasefire against the militants in Kashmir.
