India's panel for economic planning says the number of people living in poverty has declined by more than 27 percent over the past six years. The Planning Commission says the number of poor people has fallen from 26.1 percent of the population in the year ending March 2000 from 36 percent six years earlier. Of the rural population 27.09 percent were living in poverty, compared with 23.62 percent of the urban population.
