Indian Prime Minister defends quake relief operations

Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has blasted the opposition for its allegations of discrimination in the distribution of relief to survivors of the Gujarat earthquake.

India's main opposition leader Sonia Gandhi has accused the Hindu nationalist government of corruption in the relief operations.

Mr Vajpayee rejected her claim that his government has denied relief materials to Muslims and lower-caste Hindus.

He says the claim has tarnished the country's image abroad and insulted Gujarat state.

Sonia Gandhi told parliament on Monday that she was not convinced by the government's claims of speedy and even-handed relief in Gujarat.
