New blueprint being developed for India's nuclear weapons
The three chiefs of India's army, navy and airforce are due to draw up blueprints for the country's nuclear command and control structure.
Their recommendations will be presented to the Cabinet Committee on Security which is headed by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his most senior colleagues.
The Committee will then take a final decision on the creation of a nuclear strike force capable of deployment on land, sea or in the air.
A ministerial group studying national security has recommended the creation of a new post for a Chief of Defence Staff to hold the unified command of India's nuclear forces.
The United States imposed economic sanctions on India after it conducted nuclear arms tests in May 1998 that triggered a similar response from Pakistan.
India says it is committed to peace and a doctrine of defense which involves deploying nuclear weapons.
