Cambodian opposition leader calls for end to World Bank loans
A Cambodian opposition leader says he has asked the World Bank to suspend budget support loans to his country in order not to encourage corruption.
Sam Rainsy, says if the Cambodian government does not collect revenues why should it ask for money from the World Bank just to compensate for the loss of revenue due to corruption.
The World Bank is implementing active 11 projects in Cambodia worth about 85 million US dollars.
The largest of these undertakings aim to improve the country's road system neglected after years of war and mend urban water supply.
However, Mr Rainsy says the World Bank gave the government of Prime Minister Hun Sen about 20 million dollars in budget support loans last year and probably will renew these loans this year.
Mr Rainsy, who is about to wrap up a visit to the United States, met Ian Porter, the World Bank's representative for Cambodia, and presented him with a list of ten demands.
He wants the World Bank to insist on the Cambodian government's full financial accountability.
