China moves to regulate sperm banks
China says it's tightening the management of sperm banks in a bid to stop unsafe collecting methods which might encourage the spread of diseases such as AIDS. Reports in the state media say sperm banks will now have to receive Health Ministry approval and be run on a non-profit basis.
New rules are also being introduced to regulate the age and health of donors.
The new measures follow newspaper reports from the south China province of Guangdong that unscreened migrant workers are selling their blood and semen.
Correspondents say unsafe blood donations have already caused an AIDS epidemic in parts of rural China.
