Zoellick says China must comply with bilater agreements to join WTO
The United States says China's accession to the World Trade Organization depends on Beijing's willingness to live up to its bilateral commitments. US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick says it's very important to bring China into the WTO, but this can only be done if China is willing to take the steps to come into conformity with its bilateral agreements. Mr Zoellick says the Bush administration is trying to help Beijing complete its admission to the WTO, but says agriculture remains a sticking point. China wants to be treated as a developing country in the Geneva-based WTO, which would allow it to maintain subsidies of up to 10 percent on the price of agricultural products. Farm subsidies in developed countries are limited to five percent under WTO rules.
