Muslim riot paralyses industrial centre in northern India
Hindu protestors have joined bloody battles between heavily armed Muslims and riot police in northern India, leaving five dead and taking the death toll from the violence to 14.
Kanpur, one of India's leading industrial centres, has been paralysed by widespread looting and arson.
The violence was triggered by allegations that Hindu fundamentalists burned the Islamic holy book, the Koran, during a demonstration in New Delhi earlier this month.
Hundreds of riot police wielding shields and wearing bulletproof vests have been mobilised since local Muslims began protests on Friday.
Police say at least 36 people have been injured and 160 arrested in the city, with about 200 shops reportedly gutted.
