China's president to visit South America

China has announced President Jiang Zemin is to visit six Latin American countries in April, just ahead of a visit to the region by rival Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman in Beijing says Mr Jiang will visit Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba, Venezuela and Brazil between April 5 and 17.

The visit will follow the first ministerial meeting of the East Asian-Latin American Forum in Santiago, Chile, later this month, to be attended by Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan.

On his way to South America, President Jiang is also expected to visit the French Pacific island of Tahiti.
