China's vice president arrives in Washington for talks with president
China's vice-premier Qian Qichen has arrived in Washington, for his first talks with President George W. Bush.
Mr Qian, who has been in New York for the past two days, will meet President Bush at the White House on Thursday. At the meeting, President Bush is expected to raise the case of a five-year old American boy who was detained by Chinese authorities for nearly a month because of his mother's views on Taiwan.
The American embassy in Beijing has confirmed reports from a human rights group that the boy and his parents were detained at Beijing airport last month and were held separately for 26 days.
The mother is still being detained on state security charges while the boy and father have been allowed back to the US.
