Indonesia's president rules out constitutional changes to end politica
Indonesia's President Abdurrahman Wahid Monday says he will not change the constitution to end a long-running political crisis amid calls that he surrender many of his powers to his popular deputy.
Last week some opposition lawmakers called on Mr Wahid to devolve authority to Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri as a way of avoiding impeachment by a hostile parliament.
Under the proposal, put forward by parliamentary speaker Akbar Tandjung, Wahid would become a largely symbolic president and assign day-to-day governing to Megawati.
But Mr Wahid says he will not compromise on fundamental matters in the constitution.
Meanwhile in the president's home province of East Java, hundreds of Wahid loyalists have reportedly joined a volunteer force that is vowing to fight to the death in his defense.
