Sri Lanka troops consolidate after intense fight with rebels
Sri Lankan officials say government troops are consolidating after intense overnight fighting left more than 107 dead and 500 wounded among security forces and Tiger rebels.
A defence ministry spokesman says troops wrested control of an eight square kilometre area from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in the Jaffna peninsula.
The spokesman says 32 government soldiers and about 75 rebels were killed in the fighting which left 200 army troops wounded and 300 rebel casualties.
However, the rebels put their losses at six dead.
Troops backed by tanks, artillery and aircraft launched the offensive at the end of a four-month ceasefire, declared by the LTTE.
