Japanese chemical makers to build plant in Singapore
Two merging Japanese chemical makers will jointly set up a giant synthetic resin plant in Singapore. Sumitomo Chemical Co. and Mitsui Chemicals Inc., set to merge in October 2003, will spend a total of 160 million dollars to build the plant in 2005. The plant is to produce 250,000 tons of polyethylene and 300,000 tons of polypropylene annually. The new facility will boost output by Sumitomo, which already runs another Singapore factory with Royal Dutch/Shell Group. With the new plant, Singapore will emerge as the largest overseas petrochemical production base for Japanese firms. .
