Cambodian girl commits suicide

A Cambodian girl is reported to have committed suicide by drinking rat poison after being banned from joining in traditional Khmer New Year street dancing.

The Khmer-language Rasmei Kampuchea newspaper said the 18-year-old girl from the outskirts of the capital Phnom Penh killed herself on Thursday by drinking a large amount of the poison.

The newspaper quoted police as saying her brother had refused to let her out at night to dance with other youngsters.

The late-night street dancing is part of the tradition of Khmer New Year which begins on April 13 and lasts for three days.
