Malaysian prime minister criticised by his own party

The leadership style of Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has been openly criticised by senior members of his own political party.

As South East Asia correspondent Geoff Thompson reports, some political analysts and diplomats now believe support for Doctor Mahathir is weakening

Sharia Samat is a member of the Supreme Council of the United Malays National Organisation, the political party led by Prime Minister Mahathir. One of the few Supreme Council members prepared to speak openly to the foreign press, Sharia Samat has told the ABC that Prime Minister Mahathir will become a liability to the party unless he makes necessary changes. Another UMNO leader, Zukifli Alwi said the party's senior leadership could be in jeopardy unless it adjusted to the growing demands of the electorate. The 1999 general election and subsequent by-elections have shown that for the first time in its history UMNO is in danger of losing the support of the majority of Malays. .
