Japan approves big aid package for Burma

Japan has approved its biggest aid package to Burma in a decade, following the military regime's talks with democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.

South-East Asia correspondent Geoff Thompson reports.

It's the biggest grant of Japanese aid to Burma since the Junta's generals quashed the results of Aung San Suu Kyi's landslide opposition election victory in 1988. It is not the first time Burma has received bilateral international assistance in that time. In recent years, Australia has been assisting the country with human rights training courses for civil servants. But the Japanese initiative represents a return to big project aid, with a commitment to a $60 million revamp of a hydropower dam in Eastern Burma...which was originally built by Japan in the 1960s. Japanese Embassy officials in Burma have said the aid package is being made in light of positive steps taken by the government in allowing a secretive dialogue to proceed with Aung San Suu Kyi.
