Four candidates vy for Japan's top job

Four candidates have put themselves forward in the race to be Japan's next Prime Minister.

As Peter Martin reports, among the nominees is a former Prime Minister who has apologised for his past mistakes.

Ryutaro Hashimto lost office three years ago after pushing up Japan's rate of consumption tax and bringing on a recession. He said today he wanted to learn from his mistakes and apologize for his past handling of the nation's finances. Also nominating by the deadline today is the governing party's policy chief Shizuka Kamei who's in the past suggested direct goverment buying to lift the sharemarket; and Junichiro Koizumi, a faction leader who's calling for an end to factions within thye governing party. The ruling party elects its new leader, Japan's next Prime Minister, in 12 days time.
