South Korea says its recalling its ambassador to Japan in protest at Tokyo's decision to approve school history textbooks which allegedly gloss over Japanese wartime abuses.

A Foreign affairs spokesman said the ambassador would stay at home temporarily to discuss the textbook issue.

The move is the toughest diplomatic action against Tokyo yet by the government of President Kim Dae-Jung.

It follows a decision by South Korean lawmakers to cancel an annual gathering with their Japanese counterparts in protest at Tokyo's decision to approve the textbooks.
