US issues warning to Chinese-Americans
The United States has warned Americans of Chinese descent of the risks of travelling to China following the detention of several US citizens and permanent residents.
The State Department says Chinese-Americans risk arrest if they travel to China, particularly if they have ever been critical of Beijing's communist government.
It says in some cases travel to Taiwan or involvement with Taiwan media organisations has apparently been regarded as espionage by Chinese authorities.
US officials are seeking information about several Chinese-Americans currently detained in China.
The State Department says at least two Americans are now being detained by the Chinese authorities under suspicion of espionage or damaging China's national security, even though the Chinese government has not offered any evidence to substantiate the allegations.
