China provides funds for Pacific islands trade office in Beijing
China has provided an initial 40-thousand Australian dollars to the Suva-based Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat to help set up a Pacific Islands Trade Office in Beijing.
The funds, which were handed over by China's ambassador to Fiji, are part of a 12-million dollar China-South Pacific Cooperation Fund pledged last year.
A total of one million dollars from the fund has been earmarked to establish and operate the trade office.
A team from the forum secretariat has been meeting Chinese officials this week to discuss administrative arrangements for the office, which is expected to begin operations in July.
