Indonesian President to address the nation
Indonesia's President, Abdurrahman Wahid, will put his case directly to the people in a national television address today, following a censure by parliament that has opened the way for impeachment.
There have been increasing calls for him to quit, but aides say he has made no mention of resignation when he prerecorded his address at Jakarta's state palace.
Although exact details of the speech, due to be broadcast at eight hours U-T, were not available, the Associated Press newsagency says Mr Wahid thanked the parliament for expressing its views.
He also paid tribute to the security forces for maintaining order during the current political turmoil, which he described as a lesson in democracy.
Earlier today, President Wahid and his deputy Megawati Sukarnoputri met for breakfast along with top Cabinet ministers and security officials.
It is the first time the two leaders have met since lawmakers - led by Megawati's Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle - voted to censure President Wahid on Monday.
