US technicians say spy plane in southern China could be repaired
United States officials say the damaged US spy plane that is stranded in southern China, could be repaired and flown off Hainan Island.
Lieutenant Commander Terry Sutherland says a team of US technicians has completed its inspection of the plane and is now on its way to Hawaii to submit its findings to the commander of the US Pacific Command, Admiral Dennis Blair.
However, it's unclear whether the administration of President George W. Bush will press Beijing for permission to fly the plane home.
The reconnaissance plane has been on Hainan since April 1 when it made an emergency landing after colliding with a Chinese fighter jet over the South China Sea.
The incident, in which the pilot of the Chinese fighter died, sparked weeks of diplomatic tension between the US and China.
