Indonesian President in new political moves
A team of ministers has met Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid to prepare for lobbying main political parties on a compromise to stave off his impeachment.
After the meeting, Defence Minister Mohammad Mahfud announced they had discussed a plan to lobby the leaders of political parties.
He says they will tell them about seeking a compromise settlement, but one that does not run against the constitution or run against the interests of the people.
Mr Mahfud met President Wahid together with top security minister Agum Gumelar, Home Affairs' Suryadi Sudirja and Justice and Human Rights Minister Marsilam Simanjuntak.
He says Mr Wahid has asked the ministers to lobby at least three largest political parties the Indonesian Democracy Party for Struggle headed by Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri, the Golkar Party of former president Suharto, chaired by House Speaker Akbar Tanjung, and the Muslim United Development Party.
Mr Wahid says he intends to serve his five-year term until 2004 but will seek a compromise with his political foes.
