Nine Australians flying home after detention in Indonesia

Nine Australians who were detained by Indonesian authorities at a human rights conference in Jakarta last week, are flying back to Sydney this morning.

They were among 32 foreigners taken into custody and questioned after police stormed a seminar they were attending on workers' rights.

After waiting several days, the Australians were told yesterday their passports would be returned and they were free to stay or leave the country.

Another detainee, Auckland city councillor, Maire Leadbeater, is also expected to arrive back in New Zealand today after receiving her passport back.

Australian delegate Pip Hinman who was released with her young daughter on Sunday says she's worried about the local Indonesian conference organisers - one of whom is in a critical condition after being beaten.

I mean I am fearful actually because the conference organisers and I know other human rights organisations have had their offices attacked in recent times and there is definitely a crackdown on those people considered to be anyway subversive, quote unquote.
