Call for charges against Indon police to be dropped
In Jakarta, defence lawyers for nine policemen charged with shooting four student protestors three years ago have demanded that the charges be dropped.
Lawyers have told a Jakarta military tribunal that the charges are riddled with inconsistencies.
Prosecutors have charged the nine officers with opening fire without orders, leading to the deaths of four students. The defendants face up to 15 years in jail if convicted.
The shootings took place amid mounting public opposition to Suharto's rule and a crippling economic crisis. The incident was followed by two days of rioting in the capital.
The trial has been adjourned until early next month.
