Indonesia's parliament defers election of vice president

Indonesia's national assembly has deferred the election of a new vice president until later today, after two rounds of voting failed to produce a winner.

None of the three remaining candidates secured the required majority in voting which went late into the night, prompting the parliamentary chairman, Amien Rais, to announce that the third round will be held today.

Hamzah Haz -- the leader of the Muslim-oriented United Development Party -- again won in the second round with 254 votes, up from 238 votes in the first round .. but fell short of a simple majority of the 609 votes cast.

Meanwhile .. Indonesia's deposed President, Abdurahman Wahid, is set to quit the Presidential Palace today.

From Jakarta, Ginny Stein reports.

Former President Wahid has found a face saving way to quit the palace. Today he will leave for the United States where he will undergo a medical check up. Wahid yesterday hit out at those he blamed for his political demise. He accused a small group of military hardliners of being responsible. While he said he viewed the parliament's decision to oust him as illegal, he would move out of the palace today. He said he saw his future as continuing efforts to educate people about democracy.
