Japanese rail freight company to develop high speed cargo trains

Japan Freight Railway company plans to develop the world's first non-locomotive cargo train that will run as fast as limited express passenger trains.

Unlike conventional freight trains pulled by diesel or electric locomotives, it will be powered by a series of electric motors installed in the train's wagons.

J-R Freight plans to run the new train at a maximum speed of 130 kilometers an hour between Tokyo and Osaka, the nation's two major transport hubs where more than 90-percent of freight is currently handled by truck.
