West Papuan group approve of new Indonesian foreign minister

The West Papuan independence movement has congratulated Indonesia's President, Megawati Sukarnoputri on her choice of Foreign Minister.

The international spokesman for the West Papuan Presidium Council, Franz-Albert Joku, says the new Indonesian Foreign Minister, Hasan Wirayudha, has played a major role in helping ease tensions in Aceh.

Mr Joku says he was also a key player in the Habibi Government's decision to allow self-determination in East Timor:

There couldn't have been any better candidate for this important post especially looking at it from the West Papuan point of view. Hasan Wirayuda is an exceptional man who, in our view, is a kind of a specialist in conflict resolution=.
