More than 250 foreigners to observe East Timor vote
More than 900 people, including 250 foreigners from 40 countries, have been approved to monitor East Timor's elections this month for a constitutional assembly.
The assembly will become the territory's first parliament after it becomes independent early next year.
The elections are scheduled for August 30th, the second anniversary of East Timor's overwhelming vote to split from Jakarta's rule.
The United Nations has been administering the territory since late 1999.
In addition to the 900 foreign and local election observers, some five-thousand East Timorese have been recruited for polling stations and are being trained.
