Malaria kills 40 people in West Sumatra
An outbreak of malaria in Indonesia's West Sumatra province has killed 40 people since March and made hundreds more ill.
Some 369 are currently being treated following the outbreak in the Pasaman district.
Aswarni Hasan of the health office in the provincial capital Padang says the outbreak had been contained in Pasaman.
She says the health office is conducting fumigation of houses in Pasaman as well as providing mass medical services and information on how to prevent the disease from spreading.
The Jakarta Post says another malaria outbreak in the Central Java district of Magelang has hit 140 people in the first half of this year,
District head Hasyim Effendi was quoted as saying that those treated all live on the slopes of the Merapi volcano.
The local health office has sent personnel to check the spread of the outbreak. The report doesn't say if there had been any deaths at Magelang.
