Sri Lankan government says rebels planning fresh violence
The Sri Lankan government says Tamil Tiger rebels are planning fresh violence in the Sri Lankan capital, following a suicide attack on the island's only international airport.
Officials in Colombo say the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam were targeting state radio and television networks and the main electricity distributing centre in the capital.
The government's Special Media Information Centre said the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and the local television network were key targets together with the country's electricity generating and distributing centre. The government says the defence authorities had already informed the government of the threats against the capital. The statement came a day after the aviation and ports ministries made assurances that Sri Lanka was safe and there was no justification for foreign underwriters to put war-risk surcharges on ships and aircraft calling at the island.
