Indonesian exporters want coffee retention scheme scrapped
Indonesian coffee exporters have called for the scrapping of a voluntary international agreement to restrict exports, saying it has failed to prop up sagging world prices.
The deputy chairman of the Indonesian Association of Coffee Exporters, Nuril Hakim, says the 20-percent retention scheme has not been effective.
Mr Hakim says Indonesia's stance on the retention scheme, operated by the Association of Coffee Producing Countries, will be presented at the upcoming conference of the International Coffee Organization in London, later this month.
He says the scheme, under which participating countries hold back 20 percent of their normal exports, is useless if some countries continue to raise production.
Indonesia, the world's fourth-largest coffee producer, wants a scheme which would limit total production of individual countries.
