China sentences US engineer to five years jail
A Chinese court has sentenced a Chinese-American engineer to five years prison for illegally obtaining state secrets and bribery.
The A-F-P newsagency says the verdict against Fong Fuming, who is reportedly in poor health, comes more than two years after he was first arrested and five months after his trial.
The United States has previously condemned the delays as unacceptable.
A U-S embassy spokesman says the period of imprisonment will include time already served by 66-year-old Mr Fong, who was arrested at the end of February, 2000.
He says a consular officer from the U-S embassy and a relative of Mr Fong's were present in the courtroom during the sentencing.
China has said the charges against Mr Fong, who also works for a Hong Kong power company, related to him illegally obtaining 43 secret state documents through an engineer at the State Power Corporation.
