East Timor leader thanks Megawati for acknowledging independence
In a landmark meeting, Indonesia's President Megawati Sukarnoputri, has met East Timorese leaders.
The meeting, at Jakarta's state palace, involved East Timor's independence leader, Xanana Gusmao and acting foreign minister, Jose Ramos Horta.
Also at the meeting were the United Nation's chief administrator in the territory Sergio Vieira de Mello, and Fretilin party leader Mari Alkatiri.
Mr Gusmao says the meeting was very cordial and fruitful, with Mr Vieira de Mello saying the talks touched on the 50-thousand to 80-thousand East Timorese refugees in camps in Indonesian-ruled West Timor.
They also raised the case of 124 East Timorese children held in orphanages in Java, the payment of pensions for East Timorese who worked for the Indonesian civil service and a bilateral free trade proposal.
The East Timor leaders thanked Megawati for acknowledging the territory's sovereignty in her inaugural state of the nation address last month.
