Indonesia's central bank to help rupiah, as required
Indonesia's central bank says it will intervene in the foreign exchange market when necessary to prop up the slumping rupiah.
The currency continued to weaken in quiet early trade on continued corporate demand and technical factors, breaching the 9,600 level to the U-S dollar.
The rupiah rose sharply following the change in government in July, but has fallen almost nine-percent this month, including a drop of more than five-percent since last week's terrorist attacks in the United States.
Indonesia's central bank governor, Sjahril Sabirin, says it's ready to intervene in the foreign exchange market if necessary in response to the weakening rupiah.
Mr Sabirin says he sees no substantial reason for the fall, which appears to reflect increased corporate demand for the U-S dollar.
He also says there's no urgency at present to raise benchmark Bank Indonesia Certificate rates.
