Cambodia's culture minister criticised over directive
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has criticised the Minister of Cultural and Religious Affairs over a directive which imposed restrictions on the country's Muslim population.
A statement issued last week by Cambodia's Minister of Cultural and Religious Affairs, Chea Saveoun, told Muslim leaders in Cambodia to seek government permission before speaking to or organising religious meetings with foreign Muslims.
The minister add that Cambodian Muslims were prohibited from using mosques as venues for political gatherings.
The statement was distributed to Muslim communities in Cambodia following a meeting between US embassy officials and ministry officials.
But Hun Sen has told a cabinet meeting the order was unconstitutional and an attack on freedom of expression.
He said there had been no demonstrations organised by Cambodia's approximately 500,000 Muslims, who mostly belong to the country's Cham ethnic minority.
