U-S urges India and Pakistan to talk about Kashmir

The Amercian Secretary of State has urged India and Pakistan to talk about Kashmir.

Sara Macdonald reports Colin Powell has met with the Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, who's accepted an invitation to meet with George Bush in Washington next month.

In a carefully worded press conference, India's external affairs minister, Jaswant Singh and Colin Powell said they stood shoulder to shoulder against terrorism. Colin Powell said the US is seeking to end all terrorism, including that targetting India. India has accused its neighbour of sponsoring terrorism in Kashmir. The US Secretary of State says he believes Pakistan is trying to combat terrorist violence. India began shelling across the Line of Control on Monday night and Colin Powell urged the two countries to act with restraint and talk. Jaswant Singh says the Muslim majority state of Kashmir is integral to his countries secular nature, but India and Pakistan have to forget the past and learn to live together.
