Capture of wild elephant herd begins disastrously

A campaign to capture and relocate a herd of wild elephants in central Vietnam has had a disastrous beginning with the deaths of the first two elephants.

A team of Malaysian and Vietnamese elephant experts spotted the two elephants on Monday this week and shot them with tranquiliser darts.

The smaller of the two elephants escaped, but apparently exhausted by the tranquilisers, fell down a steep hillside onto rocks and died.

The larger elephant was captured and chained, but died yesterday after falling over a tree stump.
