Cambodian prime minister sacks top drug officer
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has sacked his top drug officer after one of the officer's personal aides was arrested and charged with drug trafficking.
A government official said Prime Minister Hun Sen had sent a signed directive to King Norodom Sihanouk for his approval to fire "the General Secretary of the National Authority for Combating Drugs Em Sam An.
Officials refused to comment on why Em Sam An was sacked, but the firing took place after his personal aide, high-ranking anti-drug official Colonel Sok Sopheak, was arrested and charged with drug trafficking earlier this month.
The Cambodian government has toughened its stance against drugs since coming under renewed international pressure over Southeast Asia's notorious "Golden Triangle" drugs network and the increased local harvesting of marijuana.
