Vietnam's economy weathering world downturn
Vietnam's Prime Minister Phan Van Khai says the country has managed to sustain its strong economic growth this year despite the downturn in the global economy and other unexpected problem.
However, he told the opening of a National Assembly session that the country still faces formidable problems of red tape, corruption and wasteful spending by government agencies and officials.
In a stinging criticism, Mr Khai pinned much of the blame on shortcomings in the government's leadership saying many officials, including key leaders, are limited in their capability and ethics and are indifferent to the legitimate concerns of the people.
The country faces weakening demand for exports and the costs of restoring areas devastated by a series of natural disasters.
Independent economists say Vietnam's growth will slow his year, with the Asian Development Bank dropping its estimate to 6.1 percent from 6.4 percent - still one of the highest levels in Asia.
