Indonesian military prosecutors demand jail for Trisakti killings

Prosecutors have asked an Indonesian military court to jail nine low-ranking police for a maximum three years each over the fatal shooting of four students at Jakarta's Trisakti University in May 1998.

The killings preceded bloody riots which led to the end of the 32-year Suharto regime.

Parents of the victims have previously criticised investigators for failing to uncover who gave the order for the shootings.

The nine officers, all members of the elite Brimob anti-riot squad, are on trial before the Jakarta Military Court.

The ranks of the defendants, who have not been named, are said to range from assistant brigadier, a low rank in the police force, to first inspector.

The students were shot during a protest outside on May 12, 1998, during the wave of pro-democracy demonstrations demanding the resignation of president Suharto, who had just been re-elected to his seventh term after 32 years in office.
