US slaps new curbs on Sri Lanka's Tamil rebels
The United States has included Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger guerrillas in a new list of terrorist organisations drawn up after the September 11 attacks. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, which has one of the world's most prolific suicide squads, has been on the US State Department's list of terrorist organisations since 1996. But it was not among the groups targeted for asset freezes and other penalties in a crackdown after the suicide hijacking attacks in the United States which killed almost 5-thousand people.
But the US Embassy in Colombo says the list of foreign terrorist organisations, on which the LTTE is listed, has been merged with the list established by President Bush in the wake of the September 11 attacks.
