Sri Lankan President criticised for "P.R" trip
Sri Lanka President Chandrika Kumaratunga's trip abroad to boost her image has drawn sharp criticism at home amid allegations that up to two-million dollars was spent on the public relations drive. Sri Lanka's Sunday Times newspaper has described Ms Kumaratunga's television interviews with the BBC and CNN as a "miserable propaganda blitz".
The newspaper says Ms Kumaratunga cancelled a previously planned visit to the United Arab Emirates and instead opted to travel to London last week for a five-day visit in support of the world campaign against terrorism. Critics also say economic figures given by Ms Kumaratunga in defence of her seven-year rule fell short of the gloomy picture painted by Sri Lanka's Central Bank. The main opposition United National Party criticised the President for what she said in her interviews and demanded details of payments made to the London-based public relations firm, Bell-Pottinger.
