13 die in Kashmir violence

An Indian army officer and 12-Muslim separatist militants have died in fresh violence in Indian Kashmir.

Five militants were killed by security forces, near Magam township, west of Srinagar, the state's summer capital.

Police say two more militants were shot dead by security forces in the neighbouring village of Malpora.

And an Indian army officer and five militants were killed in a fierce overnight encounter in the southern Kashmir district of Doda.

Police says the violence began when the army, assisted by counter-insurgency police moved closer to a militant's hide-out.
