Four journalists including Australian missing after Afghanistan ambush
Four journalists, including an Australian television cameraman, have been killed in Afghanistan.
Italian Foreign Minister Renato Ruggiero told the European Union foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels that the deaths were confirmed through its crisis unit in Afghanistan.
The four killed were Reuters reporters Harry Burton, an Australian television cameraman, and Azizullah Haidari, an Afghan-born photographer, journalist Julio Fuentes of Spain's El Mundo and reporter Maria Grazia Cutuli of Italy were travelling from Pakistan to Kabul when they were ambushed. Mr Ruggiero said their bodies would be flown home via the Red Cross in Kabul.
Reuters news agency says two cars in a convoy of six to eight vehicles were stopped and their occupants were forced out by armed men. A driver at the Kabul bus station said he was driving from the eastern city of Jalalabad, capital of Nangarhar province, when he saw a body on the road, stopped and found three more. The province was taken over by anti-Taliban tribal leaders last week, but pockets of Taliban and Arab fighters loyal to the al Qaeda network of Osama bin Laden are believed to be roaming many parts of the country.
