40 dead in civil unrest in Nepal
Nepal's Home Minister says at least 40 policemen, soldiers and civilians were killed as Maoist rebels ended a four-month ceasefire with a series of attacks across Nepal.
The minister, Khum Bahadur Khadka says the killings occured in the districts of Dang and Syangja districts.
He says the army may have killed as many as 80 rebels in retaliation, although he had not yet been able to confirm the reports.
The recently formed group, the People's Liberation Army of Maoist militants, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
More than 1,800 people have died in violence since the rebels started their campaign in 1996 to overthrow Nepal's constitutional monarchy and establish a Maoist republic.
A ceasefire was called in July, but peace talks have stalled over the rebels' demand for a republic.
