Indonesian army chief positive on East Timor
The head of the Indonesian army has urged his countrymen to forget their traumatic past with East Timor and embrace its sovereignty.
General Endriartono Sutarto has been quoted by the official Antara news agency as saying Indonesia must look to the future with East Timor as its neighbour.
He said his country should be capable of forgetting the past, and looking towards a better future.
His comments came amid opposition from Indonesian legislators to any move by President Megawati Sukarnoputri to attend East Timor's independence celebration later this month.
The general stopped short of commenting on whether President Megawati should attend the ceremony.
Megawati has yet to officially comment on whether she will travel to East Timor, but senior ministers have said she will go.
