A fatal clash between separatists and police in Irian Jaya

Indonesian police have shot dead two separatists after about 100 rebels armed with spears attacked a security post in Indonesia's Irian Jaya province, also known as West Papua.

Local police say the clash happened in a village in the west of the region. Two other insurgents were injured in the clash and later arrested.

The violence came three weeks after independence leader Theys Eluay was kidnapped and murdered.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for the killing, but his family and members of the independence movement have accused the military of being behind it.
