Indonesia calls for defence relations with Australia

Indonesia's Foreign Minister has ended a round of talks in Australia with a call for the gradual resumption of defence relations.

Hassan Wirajuda has held talks in Sydney with Prime Minister John Howard, before flying to New Zealand as Graeme Dobell reports.

Indonesia's Foreign Minister says Jakarta abrogated the security treaty with Australia in September, 1999, at the height of the East Timor crisis. Now Mr Wirajuda says the security dialogue with Australia has resumed. "To initiate again the defence cooperation between Indonesia and Australia. Our preference is for stability of relations including in defence matters. Our preference is for a gradual process."
