Tommy Suharto denies murder charges

Tommy Suharto, the son of the former Indonesian President, has denied police accusations that he was behind the murder of a judge and that he masterminded a series of bombings in the capital Jakarta.

Mark Bowling reports Tommy Suharto was arrested by police yesterday after more than a year on the run.

Now in police custody, Tommy Suharto has denied his part in several serious crimes. Police took more than a year to track down Tommy Suharto, the former millionaire playboy who was convicted on charges of corruption but never went to jail. In July one of the judges who convicted him was shot dead and Tommy became the prime suspect. After numerous botched raids, police were widely crticised for failiing to catch Tommy. There were even claims that members of the powerful Suharto family remained above the law in Indonesia. Ironically the National Police Chief, General Bimantoro, retired today and was praised for Tommy Suharto's capture.
